It is common to experience sore spots after wearing your new dentures. These areas can be adjusted by your dentist. Wear your dentures for at least eight hours before scheduling an adjustment.
Initially, dentures may feel loose, and chewing may be challenging. You may notice increased saliva flow and a feeling of bulkiness in your mouth. These sensations will disappear as you become accustomed to your dentures.
Start with soft foods and take small bites. Chew slowly using an up-and-down motion, and try to chew on both sides of your mouth simultaneously. Avoid sticky or hard foods until you feel more comfortable.
Practice reading aloud to adjust to speaking with your dentures. If your teeth click together, try speaking more slowly and minimizing movements that may dislodge your dentures.
To prevent staining and bad breath, clean your dentures daily. Brush all surfaces gently with a dentifrice. Clean them over a basin filled with water to prevent breakage if dropped.
Remove your dentures at night to allow your gums to rest. Always store them in water or a denture-cleaning solution to prevent warping.
DO NOT attempt to adjust dentures yourself! Over-the-counter reliners can cause gum irritation, leading to oral lesions or potential oral health risks. If your dentures feel uncomfortable or become damaged, consult your dentist immediately.
Routine check-ups, including an annual oral cancer screening, are recommended as mouth changes may require periodic adjustments.
